If you're and Elliott Smith fan and you haven't downloaded and listened to these leaked tracks yet, do
so now! HERE (if this link dies let me know)
Elliott Smith, whose apparent suicide left the music world stunned
two years ago, had a group of demos surface on the Internet two weeks
ago.
Basement II is the title of the set of demos, which was partially named after Smith’s final studio album, From a Basement on the Hill. The demos span Smith’s career, focusing mainly on the latter portion, when recording for the albums was done in Smith’s home.
The demos make the listener feel like they are in Elliott’s basement
sitting next to him, watching him record. Along with the home feel is
Smith’s signature voice and guitar style, making this disc not just a
collection of demos, but a collection of masterpieces.
One of the signature tracks on the collection is “Thirteen,” a cover
of the ‘70s rock song by Big Star. “Thirteen” was played often in
Smith’s career during live performances, but had yet to be released as
a studio track. The lyrics, which are aimed at a teenage couple, fit
perfectly with Smith’s soft, shaky voice.
“I Don’t Think I’m Ever Going to Figure It Out” originally appeared
as a b-side, but the stripped down demo version possesses the elements
that Smith wanted the song to have. This track is reminiscent of
students searching for their purpose and calling in life, but have yet
to find what it is they are searching for.
Other tracks worth checking out are the cover of Cat Stevens’
“Trouble,” and “Cecilia Amanda,” which is an original, ear-catching
tune about an acquaintance who needs to give up the party lifestyle.
After listening to the Basement collection and knowing of
Smith’s previous work, I can breathe a sigh of relief knowing great
music can be made without the help of sophisticated studios and pushy
producers. The demos have the true Elliott Smith feel: Soft and leaving
the listener with a sense of Smith’s aching pains.
